AGE AND GENDER DIF’FRRRNCIZS IN OPTIC DISC ARR.4, CUF’ AREAANDVERTlCALCW-TO-DI:SCRATIO?THEROlTERDAM STUDY. RAMRAlTAN RSJZ, GA DE WRUYNE’s, M. VAN RJZESv, HOFMAN A.‘, and DE JONG P.T.Q.M.’ Departments of ‘Ophthalmology and aBpidemiology & Biostatistics. Erasmus University Medical School, P.O. Box 1738, 3000 DR Rotterdam, The Netherlands. m To investigate cross-sectionally the association of age and gender with optic disc area, cup area (adjusted for optic disc area) and vertical cup-to-disc ratio. Methods: In the Rotterdam Study, a cohort study in a Caucasian population of 55 years and older, simultaneous stereo photographs (using the Topcon TRC-SSZO) were made of both optic discs of all 6782 ophthalmologically examined participants. Semi-automated measurements of optic disc parameters using the Topcon Imagenet System were performed on one at random selected eye of each of 1165 at random selected participants. Stratification in a younger (aged 55-74 yrs) and older (aged 75 yrs and over) age group was applied in the statistical analysis. &&& The disc area for younger men was 2.38+0.026 mm’ (SD 0.4366). for younger women 2.28~0.02 mm* (SD 0.43), for older men 2.38t0.05 mm* (SD 0.48) and oldler women 2.41 kO.04 mm* (SD 0.52). In women there was a significant association between age and disc area (P<O.o005), but not in men. A gender difference in disc area existed only in the young age group. No significant age and gender differences were found for the cup area and vertical cup-todisc ratio. Conclusion: High age is associated with a large disc area in women, but not in men, which can not be esplained yet. No age and gender differences were observed for the cup area and vertical cup-to-disc ratio.

Integrins in Trabecular Meshwork and Optic Nerve Head: Possible Association with the Pathogenesis of Glaucoma
Integrins are a family of membrane-spanning proteins that are important receptors for cell adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins. They also provide connections between the extracellular environment and intracellular cytoskeletons and are responsible for activation of many intracellular signaling pathways. In vitro and in vivo data strongly indicate that integrin-mediated signaling events ca...
متن کاملWhat is the Real Cause of Glaucoma?
Introduction: The term glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that have a characteristic optic neuropathy with associated visual field loss in common. Intraocular pressure has been considered to be the only causal factor for glaucoma and the only factor that can be manipulated to alter the course of the disease. But considering high intraocular pressure as the only factor responsible for glauco...

lent cause of visual impairment and blindness in the United States, after cataracts and macular degeneration from aging. Glaucoma is a progressive disease that causes optic-nerve head damage. Open-angle glaucoma affects 0.5% of the total US population but affects a much higher percentage (about 3%) in people aged 70 and older (1,2). Glaucoma is characterized chiefly by an increase in intraocula...
متن کاملThe Role of Retinal Oxidative and Nitrative Injury in Glaucomatous Neurodegeneration
The mechanical compression theory explaining the origin of glaucoma considers elevated intraocular pressure as the most important risk factor for the disease. This theory gives support to the essential signs of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, such as increased cupping and neuroretinal rim thinning but does not explain the existence of normal tension glaucoma. Alternatively, the vascular ischemia...
متن کاملPit-like changes of the optic nerve head in open-angle glaucoma.
Six patients with open-angle glaucoma and acquired pit-like changes in the optic nerve head are presented. In 1 patient evolution of the pit-like defect is documented. In all 6 patients progression of associated visual field deficits is described. It is suggested that such pit-like changes in selected patients with glaucoma may not represent congenital lesions but rather local, progressive nerv...
متن کاملA Possible Mechanism of the Primary Open Angle Glaucoma
The universal definition of glaucoma is that it is an optic neuropathy with assorted etiology, which disturbs the optic nerve head, thereby resulting in visual loss and permanent impairment of visual function [2]. On the other hand, primary open angle glaucoma is an optic neuropathy that is commonly associated with increased intraocular pressure. High intraocular pressure leads to retinal gangl...
